Few great artists set out in their careers with greatness in mind. When 27-year-old Alvin Ailey sewed the seeds of his Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958 with a performance by a troupe of African-American modern dancers in New York City, it is unlikely he had thoughts of creating an American dance institution. He did just that. Now in its 47th year, one of the most noted dance companies in the world has graced stages of more than 71 countries on six continents. The venerable company returns to Buffalo on Tuesday and Wednesday with two distinct evenings of repertory classics. Tuesday's program will open with a revival of "The River" (1970), Ailey's 31-minute celebration of birth, life and rebirth set to an original symphonic score of the same name by Duke Ellington.
